1908 James Standard No. 23 Tricycle

1908 James Standard No. 23 Tricycle

Browsing the 1913 James catalogue page reproduced below it seems that the same model of tricycle was made for ladies and gentlemen, the difference being a full chain-case on the Lady’s model. As this one is fitted with the freewheel rear axle, it’s a Standard Number 23 Gent’s.

Note that the Juvenile model was offered with a crossbar for the Boy’s and without for a Girl’s, whereas the adult range did not seem to have a crossbar version for the Gent’s. Although this probably varied in different years, I’m sure this was because of James’ patent on a removable crossbar.*

My tricycle featured here is an earlier version, so the catalogue does not relate exactly. But, as you no doubt know, documents for these old vehicles are hard to come by, and we have to make do with what we can find.
