1924 James Tricycle Model 28 Convertible with de Luxe Rear Axle

This James tricycle Model 28, with a 2 speed de Luxe rear axle, was manufactured between 1923-1928.

It’s a Convertible, ie it has a crossbar that you can lift to turn it from a ladies to a gents model.

JAMES PATENT CONVERTIBLE FRAME
James Cycle Co patented the idea of a crossbar that could be lifted up and down to convert a lady’s model into a gent’s. You can see it illustrated below, on their 1937 Arrow Ace Tandem.

Brakes are fitted front and rear.

In the ads below you can compare the James tricycles of 1926 (on the left) and the range available in 1951.

Andrew Pattle has recently added a history of James tricycle to the Tricycle Association website -

This is a James Tricycle I recently found for my friend Pat in France.
Three-wheelers are known as ‘triporteurs’ over there. As both bicycle versions and motorized types form an essential part of French motoring history, three-wheelers are appreciated much more on that side of the channel than they are here.
This one has an adjustable rear axle, combination rear drive and band brake, and a front pull brake.
Pat can’t wait to get it into his workshop.
