1924 Swift Cheylesmore Ladies Bicycle with ‘All-Weather’ Mudguards

The 1924 Swift was part of my display at the recent 2009 Pioneer Run, which ended at Madeira Drive, Brighton.

The Swift Co grew out of ‘Coventry Machinists Ltd’ who were one of the first, and largest British bicycle manufacturers.

This Swift sports Bluemel ‘All-Weather’ mudguards, which were an accessory available from the earliest years of the 20th century. They certainly compliment the style of any bicycle.

I’ve already written up an introduction to the Swift Cycle Co on the page for the 1919 Swift Cheylesmore bicycle (link at bottom of page). These two Swift Ladies cycles are surprisingly different. In due course I’ll take them out together and update these photos.

As this style of ladies bicycle is sometimes referred to as a ‘Swan Neck’ I added a period swan-head ladies umbrella to her umbrella clip – which also ensured that she’s definitely an ‘all-weather’ machine.

I recently obtained the Swift tool bag, below, and it is now installed in the appropriate spot.

You can see from the close-up above the Swift’s rubber accessory handlebar cover.

Every ride’s a joy ride if your bicycle is fitted with Sturmey Archer 3-speed gears.
