1931 Raleigh Gents ‘Irish Cross-Frame’ (His & Hers X-Frames)

1931 Raleigh Gents All-Steel ‘Irish X Frame’

His & Hers X-Frames

Raleigh patented their cross-frame designs before 1900, and its style was copied by many different manufacturers.

The Irish X Frame model, as its name implies, has been specially designed for use on the reputably bad roads often to be found in Ireland, or where the ground to be continually traversed is of a broken and exceedingly rough nature, thereby necessitating a frame of somewhat more substantial and stronger character than is usual.

Raleigh cross-frames were phased out in the thirties. I’m not sure if the name ‘Irish X-Frame’ (as in this 1932 Raleigh catalogue) was something to do with the model’s impending demise, or whether it was simply an advertising brainwave. The catalogue description continues:

The special X formation used gives it the additional strength exactly where it is needed, and the machine readily stands up to the hardest of hard going.

This Gents Cross-Frame is a handsome beast.

It’s in good running order, having been restored by my friend Paul at ‘Cycles of Yesteryear’ in Ditton Hill, South London.

The near-side rear seat stay has a dent in it, and I’ve not yet got round to straightening it out.

LADIES & GENTS CROSS-FRAMES

Not everyone knows the difference between and Ladies and a Gents Cross-frame. But here you can clearly see how they vary.

They’re enjoyable bikes to ride, and it’s fun to see reactions of other cyclists when we take out the pair of them. If you fancy a rare pair of matching ‘His & Hers’ vintage bicycles, how about this delightful couple?
