1939-1945 BSA Airborne R59257

1939-1945 BSA Airborne R59257

(This one now sold, relocated to Malaysia)

Some people ask me: ‘Where do you find all this old stuff?’ There’s no simple answer. I spend a lot of time looking, and have many contacts. But they still turn up unexpectedly, in unlikely places, like this one.

Though it is quite original, someone many years ago has added plastic mudguards in an effort to make it look a bit more like a civilian bike. After WW2, many of them were sold off by companies such as Pride & Clark for £5 as army surplus, and used for civilian commuting. Of course, these days, military enthusiasts do everything they can to make their BSA Airbornes look more military. But I consider this an essential part of this bike’s history and I’ve left it exactly as I found it.

The headstock shows the remains of a transfer, only partly readable. It’s a glimpse of the past that’s just beyond our reach, and reminds me of trying to remember a dream after waking, as it starts to fade back into the unconscious.

However, head transfer badges are being reproduced, and the writing that is discernible above looks to me like the repro patent badge you can see below.

This BSA Airborne is not wearing any handlebar grips, but those are also available as repro items.

BSA CHAINSET & SLIDING PEDALS

Actually, ‘sliding pedals’ is a misnomer, as they’re stuck from years of inactive storage and don’t slide. I intend to free them off, though the usual problem is that someone finds out I have an Airborne and buys it from me before I’ve attended to this type of mundane task.
