1913 Humber ‘Tourist’ Gentleman’s Bicycle
I came across this charmingly original Humber Gents completely by chance while discussing Hazlewood history with the VMCC marque specialist. Coincidentally I was due at an appointment later that day just a few miles from his house, so I availed myself of his hospitality and drove home with the Humber on my roofrack.

This Humber’s frame number is 476689.

Graham R of the VCC checked his records of old Humbers: this one falls between a 1913 and a 1914 model on his list.

It’s very useable, though I would need to lower the seat a bit for comfortable riding.

The Sturmey Archer gear change lever states that it’s a Model K, which is a 1935 model.

The rear hub has ‘K’ stamped on it too, so this was obviously a later addition, as is quite common with early bikes.

Owning a bicycle like this is almost enough to make you want to take up cricket…

The Lucas rear light is very pretty.

I’ve not yet located a catalogue for a 1913 Humber. However, I did find this catalogue page for a Humber Model 19 Tradesman’s Bike of the same year.
And here’s an advert for the Humber ‘All Stone Grey’ of 1913
By 1913, the Humber factory was turning out cars and motorycles at a respectable rate. Whereas the design of the Gents Humber cycle did not change much from 1913 until the model ended in the 1950s, contemporary motorcycle design was still in its early years. The photo below shows a 1910 Humber motorcycle
