1934 Royal Sunbeam All-Black Model P Gent’s Bicycle
This is my main road bike in summer 2009.
It’s fitted with North Road handlebars and a 1954 Sturmey Archer 3-Speed hub.
This Sunbeam would obviously have originally had Sunbeam’s own gears. But the SA gears work fine so I left them. It’s not a show bike, it’s my hack.
It arrived as the result of an exchange with my good friend Tony, who fancied my Holdsworth trike. Tony had bought it many years ago from its original owner.
As you can see, above, it needed quite a bit of work. I removed the celluloid mudguards (I don’t like them), found a decent saddle and used parts from two donor bikes to complete its restoration.
It rides extremely well, and fits my leg length perfectly.

The Sunbeam is now set up for our regular cycling activity, riding around Brighton as a family, with Delphy in the bike seat. Soraya’s BSA is in the background.
The child’s seat is a top-of-the-range Weeride, which is attached to its own crossbar that fixes to the seat tube and below the handlebars.
Delphy is very comfortable in the seat and, as she’s in front of me, I can protect her more easily.
Here’s an ‘earlier version’ of the Weeride from 1956…
